A basic auger consists of a helical form, usually called flighting, mounted onto a drive shaft. The helical shape is either machine formed from continuous metal strip (known as Continuous Flighting) or is pressed to shape from cut plate (known as Segments).
Below is a list of all the flighting sizes we stock. If your size flighting is not on the list or you require thick flighting check out our segments page here, or contact us for more info.
Be sure to read all the FAQ below the table, including some helpful tips on fitting your continuous flighting.
STANDARD CONTINUOUS AUGER FLIGHTING SIZES WE STOCK
In Australia when we talk about the Shaft OD (or the ID of the flighting) we tend to round it to the nearest full number (shown in brackets on the table). For example: 33.7 becomes 34, 42.4 becomes 42, and so on. These rounded numbers are what you will see on your quote and invoice.
Measurements are in millimeters unless otherwise indicated.

HOW DO I ORDER?
When emailing or calling to order flighting there are specifics you need to know and advise:
- Outer diameter of the flighting or the outer diameter of the tube it fits in
- Pitch of the flighting
- Outer diameter of the shaft it will be mounted on
- The flighting thickness
- Helix direction (Left or Right Hand)
- The material of the flighting (if it’s not Mild steel)

HOW IS AUGER FLIGHTING MADE? WHAT THICKNESS SHOULD I GET?
Continuous flighting is made when a metal strip, most commonly from 3mm up to 5mm in thickness, is passed through a set of rollers and “squashed” on the outer edge such that the strip deforms and takes on the helical shape. The finished thickness of the outer edge of the flighting is roughly half what it started out eg: 5mm flighting ends up approximately 2.5mm on the outer edge.
As this flighting is thinner on the outside than on the inside it will wear more on the outer edges and with continued use can wear paper thin.
We also stock and source some Australian made flighting and Segmented flights.
WHAT LENGTH OF FLIGHTING CAN I BUY?
We stock our flighting in 1.5m and 3m lengths, and you may purchase any combination of these two lengths.
Every now and then we may have a size which has a different stocked length specific to the manufacturer who uses it.
If ordering in bulk we can roll to your specified length. Learn more about Bulk ordering here.
For transport purposes each length of flighting is screwed together into a bundle.
Packaging is starting to become a problem, in so much as some transport companies will no longer accept un-packaged flighting. While we try to package goods without additional cost to the customer, please be aware that occasionally (depending on the freight carrier) we may need to add a small packaging fee to cover costs of materials and labour.
Anything travelling interstate needs to be strapped to a skid. For WA country customers we generally have a weight limit on what can be handled without the addition of a skid. Depending on the size and carrier, if ordering 9m or less your flighting is best shipped in a bundle of 1.5m lengths as it can be man-handled easily and normally minimises your freight costs. If you “require” small quantities in 3m lengths we can ship it as such but there might be a fee incurred for packaging.
FITTING THE FLIGHTING
Continuous flighting is made slightly oversize. The inner diameter is marginally larger than the shaft size to allow ease of fit over the shaft. The flighting should then be stretched down so that it is a neat fit against the shaft and then be adequately welded into place.
Fitting continuous flighting is not difficult but requires the “know how”” otherwise the end result (often termed a ‘banana’) will be unsatisfactory. Click here for our DIY link.
Despite what some auger manufacturers say, if you come across continuous flighting that has not been stretched down you should regard it as a “shoddy” job. Likewise if the flighting is not adequately welded to the shaft but has just been welded each end it is a “shoddy” job as well.
WHAT CONSTITUTES GOOD QUALITY FLIGHTING?
The manufacturer will have a tolerance for inner diameter as well as pitch and should publish what it is. The better the manufacturer the more consistent will be the fit. No manufacturer can guarantee a 100% success rate with tolerances but a good manufacturer will come close to it.
Where the auger flighting comes in a bundle it is fairly easy to determine at a glance if the pitch is consistent. Well made flighting might have from 15 to 20 lengths screwed together and one end of the bundle will look the same as the other. Some manufacturers have trouble screwing 5 lengths together because they will just not fit if the pitch is not consistent. Other than performing well, the beauty of consistent pitch means lowering freight costs as you can fit more in one bundle and lesson the space your cargo takes up.
Inner diameter can only be tested by inserting a shaft. If the shaft goes into the flighting without undue pressure and fits the shaft within half the flighting material thickness gap then it is nominally good quality. If the flighting comes in a bundle you should be able to push a shaft up the whole bundle with a little effort and then withdraw it with less effort.
Ill-fitting flighting is either too “sloppy” on the shaft (and has to be overly stretched down) or too “tight” on the shaft, not allowing a shaft to easily slide through the centre, prior to stretching down.
We are an Australian family business and guarantee our auger flighting will be within tolerance. In the unlikely event you do strike problems with tolerance we will put our money where our mouth is and replace it or refund.

SPECIAL SIZED CONTINUOUS FLIGHTING
Continuous flighting is available from us in set sizes to match barrel sizes and the manufacturer will be reluctant to set up just to make a few metres of a special size. He might have to buy in a special size steel coil to make the size out of and it takes time and material wastage to set up for manufacture. A minimum of 30m of a special size might be rolled but there would be a set up fee involved. We can normally obtain 100m amounts of any size. More info here.
If you require a small amount of a special size to match existing auger flighting it will be cheaper to purchase segmented flighting. More info here.
